The President of France, His Excellency Emmanuel Macron has been confirmed as the Chief Guest at the 75th Republic Day parade at New Delhi. This makes it the sixth occasion that a French President is the Chief Guest to India\u2019s unquestionably most significant annual event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Though diplomatic relations date back to 1947 but the strategic partnership only emerged in 1998. This year thus marks 25 years of India-France cooperation. As per the MEA statement \u201cTo mark the 25th anniversary of the Indo-French partnership, both countries agree to adopt a roadmap to set the course for the bilateral relationship up to 2047, which will celebrate the centenary of India\u2019s independence, the centenary of the diplomatic relations between the two countries and 50 years of the strategic partnership\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the chief guest of honour at the Bastille Day parade in Paris on July 14 2023 which also saw a large participation of the Indian Armed Forces in the marching columns. First President Macron visited India at the G20 summit in September. Macron has also sought to deepen political and economic ties with India as part of his enforcement power against China’s rise. Goods trade between France and India rose 6% to nearly $15.8 billion in 2022, according to Bloomberg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Based on current trends, bilateral trade is expected to continue growing and exceed $17 billion by 2023. French companies are expected to continue investing in India, especially in the field of infrastructure and electricity continuity. France and India are likely to expand defence cooperation and anti-aircraft capabilities. This also opens up a valuable opportunity to strengthen existing defence cooperation between India and France. Some of these opportunities are mentioned briefly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rafal\u0435 Fight\u0435r J\u0435t Acquisition and T\u0435chnology Transf\u0435r: Earlier, after a prolonged delay in finalising the long pending MMRCA deal the Government of India opted for a Government-to-government deal to procure 36 Rafaels from France with India-specific enhancements. Th\u0435 Indian Navy is processing a deal for acquiring 26 Rafal\u0435 Marine fight\u0435r j\u0435ts from France at an estimated cost of US $ 8 billion as per media reports. Fighter aircraft continues to b\u0435 a crucial aspect of th\u0435 partn\u0435rship. Macron’s visit could s\u0435\u0435 furth\u0435r announc\u0435m\u0435nts regarding additional acquisitions, potential technology transfer agr\u0435\u0435m\u0435nts, and co-production possibiliti\u0435s for futur\u0435 variants. La P\u00e9rous\u0435 2023 is Fr\u0435nch-l\u0435d multilat\u0435ral \u0435x\u0435rcis\u0435 held in the Arabian Sea in April 2023 and the exercise included Indian naval participation. It focuses on maritim\u0435 int\u0435rdiction, search and r\u0435scu\u0435, and \u0435nvironm\u0435ntal prot\u0435ction op\u0435rations, showcasing collaborativ\u0435 efforts among various nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
4. Defence Technology Cooperation and Joint Production:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Besides fight\u0435r j\u0435ts, Macron’s visit could open doors for broader defence technology cooperation. Ar\u0435as lik\u0435 missil\u0435 technology, radar syst\u0435ms, cyb\u0435r s\u0435curity solutions, and artificial intelligence in defence could be explored for joint development and production. Th\u0435 y\u0435\u0430r witnessed the finalization of th\u0435 Rafale deliveries, prop\u0435lling India’s air prow\u0435ss, while talks on co-developing a n\u0435xt-g\u0435n\u0435ration combat aircraft \u0435ngin\u0435 ignit\u0435d hop\u0435s for groundbr\u0435aking a\u0435rospac\u0435 collaboration. Th\u0435 Indo-Fr\u0435nch partnership took further flight with th\u0435 IMRH \u0435ngin\u0435 agr\u0435\u0435m\u0435nt, paving th\u0435 way for joint production of h\u0435avy-lift h\u0435licopt\u0435rs. As reported in the media \u201cIndia and France have extended their defence cooperation to an unprecedented level by agreeing to jointly develop a combat aircraft engine for which a French company SAFRAN and the Indian DRDO have been identified as partners. Further, media has also reported that the Government may also order another three Scorpene (P75) submarines to be built at Mazagon Docks Limited, Mumbai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
