{"id":2095,"date":"2026-07-13T14:22:40","date_gmt":"2026-07-13T08:52:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.samdesindia.in\/blog\/?p=2095"},"modified":"2026-07-13T14:22:42","modified_gmt":"2026-07-13T08:52:42","slug":"indias-defence-capabilities-update-june-2026-part-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.samdesindia.in\/blog\/indias-defence-capabilities-update-june-2026-part-1\/","title":{"rendered":"India\u2019s Defence Capabilities Update \u2013 June 2026: Part 1"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Rupal Kalebere<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>June 2026 reflected a significant month for India\u2019s defence capability-building, with developments spanning missile systems, ballistic missile defence, airborne surveillance, naval modernisation, electronic warfare, defence-industrial infrastructure and institutional reform. The month showed that India\u2019s defence modernisation is moving beyond individual platforms towards a wider ecosystem involving sensors, weapons, specialised materials, research infrastructure and faster decision-making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most visible gains were maritime. The Indian Navy commissioned INS Dunagiri, INS Sanshodhak and INS Agray, adding a modern stealth frigate, a large hydrographic survey vessel and a shallow-water anti-submarine warfare craft. The Indian Coast Guard also inducted the first of six Air Cushion Vehicles, while the Ministry of Defence signed contracts for indigenous GNSS jammers and marine gas-turbine generators for the Navy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the missile and aerospace domains, DRDO and the Services conducted successful tests of RudraM-II, the Long-Range Land-Attack Cruise Missile, the Naval Anti-Ship Missile\u2013Medium Range and a multi-layered ballistic missile defence architecture. Final Operational Clearance for the Netra Airborne Early Warning and Control system marked the maturation of an existing indigenous surveillance and battle-management capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>June also highlighted the industrial and institutional foundations of military power. India reported record defence production of Rs. 1.78 lakh crore in FY 2025-26. The proposed 10,000-tonne aluminium extrusion press at Nagpur, the Sitapur solar and battery-storage project, and revised financial powers for the Armed Forces and DRDO reflected efforts to improve manufacturing depth, energy resilience and the speed of procurement and research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Missile and Air Defence Capability Development<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DRDO and the Indian Air Force conducted successful flight tests of the indigenous RudraM-II air-to-surface missile on 2 June. The missile was released from an airborne platform under demanding conditions and reportedly followed critical trajectories before reaching its designated target with high accuracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RudraM-II has been developed by Research Centre Imarat, Hyderabad, in collaboration with several DRDO laboratories, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, airworthiness and quality-assurance agencies, development-cum-production partners and Indian industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From a capability perspective, RudraM-II strengthens India\u2019s effort to develop indigenous air-launched stand-off weapons. Such systems allow combat aircraft to strike high-value targets without entering the most heavily defended parts of hostile airspace. However, the June tests represent developmental progress rather than operational induction. Further user trials, platform integration, production clearance and procurement decisions may still be required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DRDO also conducted three consecutive flight tests on 10 and 11 June to demonstrate multi-layered defence against long-range ballistic missile threats. Different interceptor systems reportedly engaged their assigned targets successfully. A layered architecture is important because it provides more than one opportunity to intercept an incoming missile at different altitudes or phases of flight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ministry stated that the systems were designed to address threats extending to the intercontinental ballistic missile category. This is an important technological ambition, but the announcement should not be interpreted as confirmation that India intercepted an operational ICBM-class target under combat conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The effectiveness of ballistic missile defence also depends on early-warning sensors, long-range radars, secure communications and battle-management systems. The June trials demonstrate progress in interceptor technology, while the larger challenge remains integration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tests also provide context for Mission Sudarshan Chakra, described by the government as a future three-layered defence system for protecting military installations, critical infrastructure and important civilian establishments. Its architecture, budget, timeline and constituent systems remain publicly undefined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The maiden flight test of the Naval Anti-Ship Missile\u2013Medium Range was also conducted during the June trials. The development expands India\u2019s indigenous anti-ship missile portfolio and could provide the Navy with greater flexibility against hostile surface vessels. However, the official release did not disclose the missile\u2019s range, seeker, warhead or intended launch platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a maiden test, the programme remains at an early stage. Further developmental trials, platform integration and user evaluation will be required before it becomes an operational naval capability. Nevertheless, the test is significant because it demonstrates continued investment in indigenous maritime-strike technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On 15 June, DRDO conducted a successful flight test of the Long-Range Land-Attack Cruise Missile from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island. The programme is led by the Aeronautical Development Establishment, Bengaluru, with participation from other DRDO laboratories and Indian industry. Representatives of both the Navy and Air Force witnessed the launch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An operational long-range cruise missile would strengthen India\u2019s conventional precision-strike capability against command centres, airbases, logistics infrastructure and other strategically important targets. Yet the release did not disclose the missile\u2019s range, speed, warhead, guidance system or intended operational platform. The test should therefore be viewed as an important developmental milestone rather than confirmation of an operationally deployed capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The inauguration of an Advanced Weapon System Complex at DRDO\u2019s Defence Research and Development Laboratory in Hyderabad added an infrastructure dimension to these developments. The facility is intended to support advanced missile and strategic-system development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Airborne Surveillance and Battle Management<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A major aerospace development in June was the granting of Final Operational Clearance to the indigenous Netra Airborne Early Warning and Control system. Netra received Initial Operational Clearance in 2017 and had already entered Indian Air Force service. Final clearance indicates that the approved configuration has completed the remaining testing, evaluation and validation requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Netra provides airborne surveillance, early warning, situational awareness and battle-management capability. Its elevated radar can detect and track aerial threats beyond some of the limitations of ground-based sensors. It can also support fighter interception, coordinate air-defence operations and provide commanders with a wider operational picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The system\u2019s indigenous mission architecture is strategically important because domestic control over software and systems integration allows modifications to be introduced in response to changing threats. The achievement represents the maturation of an existing capability rather than the induction of a new platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The principal limitation remains fleet size. Future capability enhancement will depend on additional platforms, high serviceability and deeper integration with fighters, ground radars and surface-to-air missile systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To be
