The month combined ministerial dialogues, institutional defence mechanisms, naval deployments, maritime capacity-building, defence-industrial discussions and public diplomacy.

From Australia and Southeast Asia to Africa, the Indian Ocean, the Caribbean and the United States, India sought to translate political relationships into practical security cooperation. Maritime-domain awareness, interoperability, training, platform maintenance, defence manufacturing and indigenous naval capabilities emerged as the principal themes.

India–Australia Defence Partnership Deepens

The second India–Australia Defence Ministers’ Dialogue was held in New Delhi on 1 June 2026, co-chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles.

The dialogue marked further progress towards a more operational and technology-focused partnership. Both sides discussed strengthening their Joint Declaration on Defence and Security Cooperation and finalising a Joint Maritime Security Collaboration Roadmap.

Maritime-domain awareness remained central to the discussions. India and Australia agreed to expand cooperation involving maritime patrol aircraft and explore opportunities in undersea-domain awareness. They also discussed deeper engagement between the Indian Coast Guard and Australia’s Maritime Border Command.

The two countries planned a search-and-rescue and tabletop exercise in Chennai under the Indian Ocean Rim Association framework. They also agreed to improve procedural interoperability for exercises and operations, building on the 2020 Mutual Logistics Support Arrangement.

Defence-industrial cooperation received particular attention. India and Australia announced that they would begin developing a memorandum of understanding concerning the provision of defence articles and defence services. Cooperation in emerging technologies, including sensor technologies, was also discussed.

The dialogue reviewed participation in exercises including Milan, Kakadu, Austrahind, Talisman Sabre, Pitch Black and Black Carillon. Plans for inaugural Joint Staff Talks and improved secure communications indicated a gradual move towards closer operational coordination.

The two countries also reaffirmed support for the Quad Indo-Pacific Partnership for Maritime Domain Awareness. India’s operationalisation of the initiative through the Information Fusion Centre–Indian Ocean Region further strengthened its role in regional maritime information-sharing.

India and Zimbabwe Establish a New Defence Mechanism

India and Zimbabwe held the inaugural meeting of their Joint Defence Committee in New Delhi on 4 June 2026.

The meeting operationalised the defence cooperation memorandum signed during Aero India 2025. Both sides agreed to expand cooperation in military training and the maintenance and support of common air assets.

They also identified joint manufacturing, counter-terrorism, border management and peacekeeping as possible areas for future collaboration. The Zimbabwean delegation interacted with representatives of Indian defence public-sector enterprises to explore industrial opportunities.

The creation of the Joint Defence Committee provides a regular mechanism for reviewing progress and developing practical projects. It also supports India’s broader effort to deepen defence partnerships with African countries through training, maintenance, capacity-building and affordable defence solutions.

Maritime Engagement across the Indian Ocean

India maintained a strong naval presence across the Indian Ocean Region during June through visits to Seychelles, Mauritius and Sri Lanka.

Seychelles

INS Tarkash arrived at Port Victoria after escorting the Seychelles Coast Guard vessel PS Zoroaster from India. The vessel had completed a refit at Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers in Kolkata.

The escort and delivery of spares demonstrated India’s role in providing lifecycle support for maritime platforms. Such support is especially important for island states that depend on a limited number of vessels to monitor large maritime zones.

Later in the month, INS Ikshak, an indigenously built survey vessel, arrived in Seychelles during the country’s 50th National Day celebrations. The visit included professional exchanges, medical camps, distribution of essential supplies and public outreach.

Together, the two visits highlighted the range of India–Seychelles maritime cooperation, covering vessel maintenance, hydrographic capability, operational support and humanitarian engagement.

Mauritius

INS Tarkash also visited Port Louis, where it conducted training for Mauritius National Coast Guard personnel.

The training covered harbour and sea watchkeeping, firefighting, damage control, maritime safety and seamanship. These activities contributed directly to the coast guard’s operational readiness.

The ship was also opened to the public, attracting members of the Indian diaspora and local community. The visit combined maritime-security cooperation with community and cultural diplomacy.

Sri Lanka

INS Sharda’s port call at Colombo included training for Sri Lankan Navy personnel in small-arms handling, firefighting, first aid and rescue procedures.

Professional exchanges, cross-deck visits and sporting engagements helped strengthen familiarity between the two navies. The visit reinforced the practical nature of India–Sri Lanka maritime cooperation, particularly in areas such as emergency response, search and rescue and neighbourhood security. These Indian Ocean engagements reflected India’s MAHASAGAR vision, which places capacity-building, shared security and sustained regional partnerships at the centre of maritime cooperation.

Rupal Kalebere India’s international defence engagements in June 2026 reflected the growing geographical and functional reach of its defence diplomacy.
