A clear theme emerged across the month: India’s defence capability growth is increasingly being driven by indigenous production, deeper MSME participation, and a more coherent alignment between procurement, doctrine, and long-term national ambition. Maritime capability expansion stood out in particular, but developments in procurement planning, logistics, surveillance, and force modernisation across services also reinforced the wider pattern of structural acceleration.
Strategic Overview
March 2026 was arguably one of the most consequential months for Indian defence indigenisation in recent years. A cluster of major developments occurred within a very short span, especially on 30–31 March, when the Indian Navy received Dunagiri, Agray, Malwan, and Sanshodhak, while the Indian Coast Guard’s next-generation offshore patrol vessel Shachi was launched at Goa Shipyard Limited.
These developments were not isolated milestones. They were accompanied by the release of Defence Forces Vision 2047 and by the Defence Acquisition Council’s largest single-session Acceptance of Necessity. Together, these events suggested a stronger convergence between long-term strategic planning and visible programme execution.
The broader signal from March is that Indian defence manufacturing, especially in the naval sector, is no longer merely building capacity but is beginning to demonstrate sustained production tempo.
Defence Acquisition Council Clearance
Historic Procurement Approval
On 27 March 2026, the Defence Acquisition Council, chaired by Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh, cleared major proposals as part of FY26 procurement planning. The March session alone accounted for Rs 2.38 lakh crore in Acceptance of Necessity, making it the largest such clearance in Indian defence history.

Maritime Capability Expansion
Project 17A Frigate Programme. On 21 March 2026, the Indian Navy announced the commissioning of Taragiri, the fourth Project 17A frigate, scheduled for 3 April at Visakhapatnam. Built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, Taragiri represents a major step in indigenous warship construction, with indigenous content exceeding 75 percent and contributions from more than 200 MSMEs.
Its propulsion and weapons configuration reinforces its role as a modern multi-mission combatant. The platform carries advanced offensive and defensive systems, including surface-to-surface missiles, medium-range air defence capability, and anti-submarine warfare systems integrated through an advanced combat management system.
Dunagiri: Delivery in Record Time. On 30 March 2026, Dunagiri, the fifth ship of the Nilgiri-class under Project 17A, was delivered at GRSE, Kolkata. Built in 80 months, compared with 93 months for the first ship of the class, Dunagiri demonstrated a meaningful improvement in production efficiency and programme maturity.
With 75 percent indigenous content, over 200 MSMEs involved, and more than 14,000 jobs created, Dunagiri reflects the deepening integration of India’s industrial ecosystem into frontline naval capability creation.
The Project 17A programme is now emerging as one of India’s clearest examples of successful defence industrial learning. The improved build timelines and consistent delivery pattern suggest that the programme has moved beyond first-of-class difficulties into a more stable and scalable production phase.
Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft Programme. Agray and Malwan join the Fleet. On 30–31 March 2026, Agray and Malwan were delivered under the Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft programme, with Agray delivered from GRSE and Malwan from Cochin Shipyard Limited.
These vessels are intended to strengthen India’s coastal and harbour anti-submarine warfare capability. Both platforms have indigenous content above 80 percent and are equipped with lightweight torpedoes, indigenous rocket launchers, and shallow water sonar systems. Their waterjet propulsion also marks an important technical feature, making them among the largest Indian warships to use such a system.
The induction of these vessels deepens India’s layered maritime defence posture, especially in littoral and near-shore environments. They reinforce the Navy’s ability to counter undersea threats in shallow waters while also expanding the domestic shipbuilding base across multiple yards.
Survey Vessel Programme Completion
Sanshodhak Delivered. On 31 March 2026, Sanshodhak, the final Survey Vessel (Large), was delivered at GRSE, Kolkata, completing the four-ship programme. The vessel has more than 80 percent indigenous content and includes advanced hydrographic and underwater survey systems such as an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle, Remote Operated Vehicle, long-range DGPS, and digital side scan sonar.
The completion of this programme expands India’s hydrographic and seabed mapping capability, which is important not only for naval operations but also for maritime domain awareness, navigational safety, and broader strategic presence in the Indian Ocean region.
Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel Programme. Keel Laying and Launch Milestones
Between 17 and 31 March 2026, the Indian Coast Guard’s eleven-ship Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel programme recorded major progress. Keels were laid for Yards 16402 and 16403 at Ratnagiri, while Yard 1280, named Shachi, was launched at Goa Shipyard Limited.
These platforms are designed with a stronger technological profile, incorporating AI-based predictive maintenance, remote piloted drones, an integrated bridge system, and an integrated platform management system. With a length of 117 metres, speed of 23 knots, and range of 5,000 nautical miles, they represent a substantial capability enhancement for coast guard operations.
The NGOPV programme signals an important shift in maritime law enforcement and coastal security capability. It also demonstrates that advanced features once associated primarily with naval combatants are increasingly becoming standard in patrol and constabulary platforms.
