India’s recent decision to join the Artemis Accords marks a historic milestone for the country’s space program and underscores its commitment to peaceful and sustainable space exploration.

About Artemis Accord

As is known ‘The Artemis Accords originated as a collaborative effort to promote international cooperation and ensure a sustainable and peaceful exploration of space, with a specific focus on the Moon’. The aim of the Artemis Accords is to establish a framework of principles and guidelines that govern lunar exploration activities, including peaceful purposes, transparency, interoperability, emergency assistance, space resources utilization, registration of space objects, the release of scientific data, preserving heritage sites, and space debris mitigation. These accords represent a collective effort by the signatory nations, along with international partners, to ensure a safe, transparent, and responsible approach to lunar exploration, supported by NASA’s Artemis program. By adhering to the Artemis Accords, participating nations strive to foster scientific discovery, facilitate space resource utilization, and ensure the long-term sustainability of space exploration endeavours. The initial signatories to Accord were the United States, Australia, Canada, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom who enrolled on October 13, 2020. Subsequently, on June 21, 2023, India joined as the 27th signatory of the agreement during a ceremony at the Willard InterContinental Hotel in Washington with the participation of NASA Administrator Bill Nelson and India’s ambassador to the United States, Taranjit Singh Sandhu.
