The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully executed a flight test of the Supersonic Missile-Assisted Release of Torpedo (SMART) system, which marks a significant advancement in India’s naval capabilities. The test, carried out near the Odisha coast, signifies a significant achievement in India’s defence technology, specifically in the field of anti-submarine warfare.

The SMART system is a state-of-the-art missile-based lightweight torpedo delivery system that aims to greatly enhance the anti-submarine warfare capabilities of the Indian Navy. The successful test flight confirms the effectiveness of Indian defence research and development, positioning the country among a small number of nations with superior capabilities in anti-submarine warfare.

SMART: A Game-Changer in Anti-Submarine Warfare

The SMART system demonstrates India’s efforts to develop defence technology indigenously.  The SMART system, created by DRDO, is set to revolutionise anti-submarine warfare. The missile system utilises a canister and features advanced sub-systems such as a two-stage solid propulsion system, electromechanical actuator system, and precise inertial navigation system, among others.

An impressive characteristic of the SMART system is its capacity to transport sophisticated lightweight torpedoes as a payload. This feature expands the scope of conventional lightweight torpedoes, greatly improving the Indian Navy’s capacity to operate in anti-submarine warfare situations. In addition, the system has a parachute-based release mechanism to ensure accurate deployment of torpedoes.

Minister of Defence Shri Rajnath Singh praised the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and its industry partners for the successful flight test of the SMART system. He stressed that the creation of the SMART system will greatly enhance the Indian Navy’s capacities, highlighting its crucial role in protecting India’s maritime interests.

Dr. Samir V Kamat, the Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and the Chairman of DRDO, praised the collaborative efforts of the whole SMART team. He implored the team to persist in their pursuit of excellence, underscoring the pivotal importance of their work in propelling India’s defence technology forward.
