In a groundbreaking moment for the Indian Navy and a significant stride towards gender equality, the Indian Naval Sailing Vessel Tarini embarked on an unprecedented journey from INS Mandovi, Goa to Port Louis, Mauritius on 28th February 2024. What makes this expedition truly remarkable is that it is the first-ever transoceanic voyage undertaken by Indian women in a double-handed mode.

Leading this historic expedition are two remarkable women officers, Lt Cdr Dilna K and Lt Cdr Roopa A, who exemplify the strength and capability of women in the maritime domain. Their journey not only showcases their exceptional skill and dedication but also underscores the nation’s commitment to promoting gender inclusivity in traditionally male-dominated fields.

This expedition is not merely a feat of adventure; it is a testament to years of preparation and perseverance. Lt Cdr Dilna K and Lt Cdr Roopa A have been meticulously preparing themselves for this moment over the past two and a half years, undergoing a rigorous selection process and participating in various sailing expeditions, including voyages from Goa to Mauritius and back in 2022, from Goa to Rio De Janeiro via Cape Town and back in the previous year, and from Goa to Port Blair and back in a double-handed mode.

Their journey to Mauritius serves as a crucial part of their preparation for the upcoming circumnavigation of the globe, scheduled later this year. As they set sail, they carry with them not only their own aspirations but also the hopes and dreams of a nation rooting for their success.

The significance of this expedition was further highlighted by its flag-off ceremony, presided over by Commander Abhilash Tomy (Retd), KC, NM, a distinguished yachtsman who has circumnavigated the globe non-stop on sailing boats twice. His mentorship to the two women officers over the past six months speaks volumes about the spirit of camaraderie and support within the maritime community. In his address, Commander Abhilash Tomy expressed his pride in flagging off this monumental expedition, emphasizing the spirit of adventure and resilience that defines the Indian Navy.

As the Indian Naval Sailing Vessel Tarini charts its course towards Mauritius, it symbolizes not just a journey across the ocean but a journey towards breaking barriers and shattering stereotypes. We wish Lt Cdr Dilna K and Lt Cdr Roopa A fair winds and smooth seas and forever a fathom below the keel on their historic voyage, and we eagerly await their triumphant return, knowing that they carry with them the pride and admiration of the entire nation.

God Speed and Good Luck in this magnificent adventure.
