In a significant display of camaraderie and military cooperation, the 5th edition of the joint military exercise ‘Dharma Guardian’ between the Indian Army and the Japan Ground Self Defence Force kicked off today at Mahajan Field Firing Ranges in Rajasthan. This annual exercise, which alternates between India and Japan, aims to foster closer ties and enhance combined capabilities between the two nations.

The exercise, scheduled from 25th February to 9th March 2024, sees the participation of 40 personnel from each side. Representing Japan is the 34th Infantry Regiment, while the Indian Army contingent hails from the esteemed Rajputana Rifles Battalion.

The primary objective of ‘Exercise Dharma Guardian’ is to bolster military cooperation and proficiency in executing joint operations, particularly in semi-urban environments as outlined in Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter. With a focus on physical fitness, joint planning, tactical drills, and special arms skills, the exercise aims to elevate the operational readiness of both forces.

Throughout the exercise, troops will engage in various tactical drills including establishing temporary operating bases, conducting intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance operations, executing cordon and search operations, and practicing heliborne operations and house intervention drills. An essential component of the exercise includes a Weapon and Equipment Display, highlighting India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative and its burgeoning defense industrial capability.

Noteworthy is the visit of Lieutenant General TOGASHI Yuichi, Commanding General, Eastern Army, Japan Ground Self Defence Force, who is set to witness combat shooting demonstrations, special heliborne operations, and house intervention drills during his visit to the Mahajan Field Firing Ranges on 3rd March 2024.

Beyond the tactical maneuvers and drills, ‘Exercise Dharma Guardian’ serves as a platform for the exchange of best practices in tactics, techniques, and procedures, enhancing interoperability and mutual understanding between the two friendly nations. This collaboration not only strengthens defense cooperation but also deepens bilateral relations between India and Japan.

As the exercise progresses, it underscores the shared commitment of India and Japan towards regional security and stability, further solidifying their strategic partnership in the Indo-Pacific region.
